Using the Web

Consider how your use of the Web has changed since you began your study of Web 2.0 earlier this semester. Which tools and technologies did you find the most useful that will become part of your Web 2.0 toolbox? What trends have you seen in terms of new applications or ways that applications interact with each other on the Web?

Since the start of this course, I have become a little more aware of some of the tools available, such as Google timeline and news sites.  Tools such as these make researching easier.  Timeline is definitely one I will continue to use.  Yelp and Flickr are other platforms that I enjoy using because of my travels.  Yelp helps me find interesting destinations nearby, and Flickr gives me a place to save the pictures I take at those places!
One of the trends that I have noticed is applications partnering with other media sites and applications.  For example, this year Snapchat added the Discovery feature which features networks and companies such as Mashable, Foodnetwork, Cosmopolitan and other.  Each of these publishes a "story daily that Snapchat users can watch and send snapchots of articles or pictures to friends.  Spotify is another one that is constantly partnering up with different products and brands to deliver new playlists to users,

Week 12 Pinterest Privacy and information

I researched the policies for Pinterest, an online pin board where users find, share and create pins on ideas or items they are interested in.  Pinterest uses different types of information; it utilizes technical information to remember who I am and identify which device I using.  Also, since my Facebook is linked to my Pinterest account, it also can access certain information, such as my “friends.”  They also use information from other third party users and partners to find out my interests in order to customize the pins they suggest. They also may use location to suggest pins.  Another way they use and share my information is to show ads that relate to my activity both on and off the site.
However, I can customize my information in order to limit what off-site information Pinterest can collect as well as how much it can use to customize what it suggests.  I can also unlink my Facebook account in order to limit the information it can collect from that site.

As far as the security breach protocol, I wasn’t able to find this.   However, I hope that they do have a policy and plan in place.

Blog Assignment BUED 340; This is Me!

Hello all you sassy fiends!
My name is Ashley Andrews and I am currently a senior majoring in Communications Studies with a minor in Trainging & Development.  Once graduation hits, I am hoping to be out of the Midwest!  I grew up in Wisconsin and have an undying love for all things cheese as a result.  (I probably would anyway but being raised on good cheese probably made a difference).  Some of my other interests/passions include reading books, coffee, traveling, the strange and unusual. and delicious food.

Three of my favorite websites are:
Chocolatecoveredkatie.com- A vegan dessert blog!  I am far from vegan (see "cheese as listed above) but she has a lot of creative and healthy desserts that I enjoy experiemtingwith.
Pinterest.com- A guilty pleasure of mine; I have way too many boards, and way too many pins!
Yelp- I love using yelp and other sites like it especially when I am in an unfamiliar place.  It allows me to review and research a variety of restaurants and activities in the area.

There you have folks!  Me in a very tiny, basic nutshell.

Don't Nix the IX

Don’t Nix the IX

Title IX
Huh?
Isn’t the Superbowl way past that?

If you were anything like me, “Title IX” is insignificant and confusing.  However, once I knew what it was, it became a whole lot more important.

The Winona RE Initiative Group on campus, a group committed raising awareness of gender based violence (GBV) issues and educating individuals on related issues.  The latest campaign, in alliance with their Take Back the Night event and film screening of “the Hunting Ground”, is focused on spreading awareness on Title IX and its importance.

So what on earth is Title IX and does it affect me?
Indeed.

Knowyouix.org is a website dedicated to educating the public of what Title IX is, what it does, and who it involves.  In addition to being a valuable information source, the site also provides guidelines for reporting, getting involved, and other statutes that deal with gender based violence.

In short, campuses, as well as secondary schools, are responsible for ensuring the safety of all it’s occupants from sex discrimination, sexual harassment and/or violence and is responsible for reacting, enforcing and investigating all cases in a manner that will not bring further harm to the complainant.

Here's are some quick summaries of what Title IX includes.
  • Sex discrimination of any sort in any and all public education systems is forbidden.
  • Schools must reasonably accommodate the victim to ensure safety, such as a no contact directive or changes in various schedules or living hall.  The school must also provide counseling, class or housing switch, adjustment of extracurricular or campus job schedules fee of additional cost to the victim.
  •  Students, staff, and faculty of ALL sexes, gender identities, and gender expression are protected from sexual harassment or violence, or sex discrimination.
  •  Schools are forbidden to take action against an individual who has or is filing a complaint and is responsible for protecting the student filing against any harmful behavior directed towards that individual as a result of the complaint.
  •  Schools cannot prevent a victim of sexual violence from taking legal action against the accused.  It is also forbidden that the school initiate or allow for mediation between the complainant and the accused.

  •   Institutions must have a documented reaction plan to IMMEDIATELY address and correct any sex discrimination, sexual harassment or sexual violence occurring at the school within the allotted time frame.

With the many sexual violence cases that have been reported this past year alone, such as that of Emily Sulkowicz and  Lena Sclove, as well the voices of male victims, it’s becoming more clear why not only Title IX itself is important, but the education and awareness of its existence and scope.

Emily Sulkowicz carrying her mattress at Columbia University

The Re Initiative plans on launching its Title IX campaign in April, which happens to be Sexual Assault Awareness month.    This is an issue that’s not going away, and Gender Based Violence is never an easy topic to discuss.  However, big props for the RE Initiative and its members for taking it upon themselves to open up and create the much needed discussion on GBV and to spread awareness.  Ending gender based violence is a topic that needs ALL of our voices.

Dogs

Lyric:  "People throw rocks at things that shine..." Ours by Taylor Swift.  (Super cute vid by the way)

Walking my neighbor's dog today, I enjoyed observing how Lilly explored EVERYTHING as if it was something new and exciting, even if it was just her own yard.  It got me thinking how we-me-tend to have the opposite attitude:  Things are novel for a while, but it seems we sometimes soon lose interest and kind of take whatever it is for granted.  Personally, this is something about me that I really don't like. So my aspiration: to be more like a dog in the sense of treating everything as if it is something new and exciting. i.e., appreciating what I have and utilizing it.

Quirkle:  I hate how my voice sounds on recordings

:)

Lyric:

Some days I just love people.  For example the tuition lady at school is awesome.  Sick and miserable and still hilarious.  I must strive to be more like this!!!
So one of my new goals, and this may sound a bit  hokey, is to be moe in tune with myself.  See I told you! Gosh I sound like a hippie...but what I mean by this is really know and understand what I may think about a certain person, thing or idea and not let others dictate my opinion on the matter.  At the same time, I want to be open minded and willing to change my mind, but in a nutshell, bot let others biases determine if I like it or not.

Quirkle: Clutter irritates me, but I am NOT a neat freak at all...what?

Lyric:  "I won't be afraid, No I won't be afraid, Just as long, as you stand, stand by me." Ben E. King

Alright I have some somberish thoughts but I'm going to try to add an upbeat/encouraging note as well so lets see what I can do.
Today I found out that one of my childhood friends has been missing for 3 days.  I don't talk to her anymore and haven't for a long time, but it's still frightening and very sobering.  Appreciate what you have and love those around you because there are no guarantees.  Hoping Leah is alright and remembering her...
Okey now to try for happier things...
Worked out for the 2nd day in a row....woah! x)

Snowwww is everywhere!!

Lyric: "Oh no I've said to much, I haven't said enough." Losing My Religion- R.E.M. but posted because of Dia Frampton's cover, which I am completely in love with.

Worked out at work today(the new job referenced in thankfuls) and man it is hard work!!   Is it weird that I am hoping I'll be sore tomorrow?? Solely for the reason that it will have meant that I worked out hard!!  If you want it you gotta work for it; Most definitely the truth.  And that is the base of my thought today:  That dream job, those rock hard abs, that dream guy, whatever you want to achieve, it isn't going to come for free and there's never a guarantee it will be easy.   But if you want it bad enough, you'll find a way to make it happen.  In the end, all the hard work and long hours you put in will make your accomplishment that much sweeter.  "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game." -A Cinderella Story.  The fear of failure or rejection is always on our minds because everyone HATES the feeling that accompanies it.  But if we allow that fear to become the dominant emotion, we hold ourselves back from fantastic possibilities.

Run Run Run....Or that's what I need to do at least

Lyric:

Hm hm hm....well today I want to talk about the easiest way to a) beautify yourself, b)make others happier, c) make you happier and c) be a friendlier, more approachable person.  This wondrous trick? SMILE!  I noticed it today when we were at El Mezcal (See Bright Spots) when our waitress was serving us.  I'm sure she is a great lovely person, but the fact that I never saw her smile just made her seem down and unfriendly and unapproachable.  It made me reflect on how often do I walk around just frowning or looking unfriendly.  Now don't necessarily walk around grinning as widely as possible at all times of the day.  No that would make you look like a crazed serial killer.  But don't be afraid to smile at someone in the grocery store or when you are making conversation (if the topic is appropriate that is.) Bear those pearly whites! In a friendly non-frightening way that is... ;)

Post Thanksgiving and Thanksgivingness

Lyric: "And I'm Not Sure What This Is Gonna Be, But With My Eyes Closed All I See, Is The Skyline, Through The Window, With The Moon Above You And The Streets Below..." Parachute- Kiss Me Slowly

Thankgiving was faaantabulous!  The gang usually gathers at my families house for the feasting and this year was no exception!  It was defnitely a smaller crowd than usual, but definitely not complaining; I actually really enjoyed it that way!  Not that I don't love having the rest of my family there, it just seemed much more relaxed and close.

Since it was just Thanksgiving, I feel like I should do something about being thankful....But I don't want to be redundant since I do post "Thankfuls'" everyday.  So I'll just keep it short and sweet.
Be Thankful for:  The people and things you have, even when they drive you crazy!  You never know when everything could change so cherish it.
Life- You have it so be glad for it!  Even times are tough and miserable, be thankful that you have the chance to be alive.
Health:  You never know what you have until it's gone, and you never know when it can be snatched or altered so fill those lungs with air and be glad!
Dark Times: They make you stronger
Friends & Family- These support systems are what will help you through the bad times and enjoy with you the good times.
Chocolate- don't need a reason x)

Turkey Day! Well Almost

"What do got if you ain't got love, Whatever you got, It just ain't enough..." Bon Jovi- If you ain't got love

Thoughts:  " Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events;small minds discuss people. Eleanor Roosevelt"  Great advice to keep in mind, myself definitely included.  Gossiping is petty and often
reflects more on you than the subject.  Venting is sometimes a must, I understand that but don't make every conversation about someone else and their faults.  As human's we all make mistakes, ourselves included. :)  It is now one of my goals to be more "large" minded ;)

"Bad" Mornings don't necessarily meant the rest of the day will be such

"And so lying underneath those stormy skies, She'd say, "I know the sun must set to rise," Paradise- Coldplay
So the morning was a bit hectic; half asleep to here Mom yelling, "Where are my keys?! And I am taking your car because you killed mine!"  Oh happy happy joy joy.  SO I finally get out the door and into the car I'm using,  running a bit behind as it is, and I have to stop to air up my tire.  With literally no time to spare, I jump in the car and get down the road about 1/4 of a mile and the gaslight turns on (I have a floating gas guage so it's impossible to tell how much gas I really have, but when the gas light turns on, it's time.)  Now living in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, there really aren't any gas stations on the way to the college so I am forced to turn around and get gas.  now about 10 minutes late to class, on the day we have a test, everything is just peachy.  And the test really didn't go fantastic.  It was definitely a fustrating morning for sure but thankfully it didn't ruin my day.  For whatever reason, it didn't out me in an angry funk, thank goodness.  I guess the moral of this story is, "You must control your mornings, don't let them control you!" x)
Coolest food idea EVER! (maybe a slight exaggeration)  Banana "Ice cream."  Best invention ever! Cut a banana(s) into slices and freeze.  When frozen, blend with milk (the more you add the less thick it will be)  and voila! low cal frozen dessert! Of course you can always add chocolate, peanutbutter and/or other guilty pleasures to make it a little more indulgent x).  Oh and the more ripe the banana. the more banana flavor it will have.

Ahhh I love the 90's! great era indeed x)

Well I decided I'm going to tie in today's topic with above song title;  I've heard it said that Love is looking past someones flaws and loving them for their faults, or despite those characteristics.  To me, that sounds like it could be a daunting task, but at the same time, I see the truth in it. People I love to have flaws but I love them either for it, or regardless. As humans we are bound to have flaws; it's inevitable.  BUT at the same time, it seems like the human in us is always seeking out others faults while bypassing our own.  Once we acknowledge this, we can in turn try to correct ourselves and and respect/love others in spite of the things that may seem undesirable to us.  Remembering that we are all unique for a reason also can help us respect others differences or faults.

I'm back!

Big Thank you to "farmermarvswife" for the reminder to stop slacking ;)
Sorry for the absenteeism!  I shall try to make a super fantastic post to make up for it...ha!

Lyric: We Are The Champions, My Friends, And We'll Keep On Fighting To The End..."  Queen- We are The Champions; in honor of the boys fantastic win on Thursday!  Awesome job guys!

Thoughts:  In light of my laziness in posting, the topic, in a nutshell, is suck it up!  Don't want to write that paper, no ambition for that quiz, no gumption to get out of bed; I shall lay here and admire the ceiling paint, etc.  We've all had this problem, I'm sure.  And while I don't think  this is a problem ON OCCASION, it is when it starts becoming an excuse.  Putting it off usually only adds to the dread and then the stress doubles when you try to accomplish it at the last minute.  So how to overcome this?  You can either a) just get up and do it or b) if you're the kind of person who needs motivation, try this:  Pick something you enjoy/want to do-go out; read that new book, spend hours on youtube or Pinterest, etc- and then don't allow yourself to do it until your chore/assignment is done.  It takes some willpower but with an incentive, you'll probably accomplish whatever it is faster than normal.  Another idea is to set a time limit (and an incentive! double bonus!)  This is excellent for those of us who are of the competitive sort!  Now to apply this to myself and clean my room....

Quirkle: I'm a firm believer that the only good coffee is the coffee that doesn't taste like coffee.

This could get interesting...

But All We Serve Are Empty Words, That Always Taste The Same" Nickelback, When We Stand Together

It could be an interesting week...I have agreed to let my brother choose my outfits for the week.  :O  This is quite terrifying for me!!While his ensembles really aren't bad , he doesn't seem to realize that it's mid-November...As a result, I have picked out his  outfits for the next few days to somewhat mimic mine, in terms of warmth.  For example on the day he is having me where a shorter dress with open toed shoes, he is wearing shorts and sandals.  I'm going to try to convince him to at least consider allowing some leggings!  Then he can wear pants :P  I will post pictures, so brace yon selves!

Thoughts of the Day:  See song lyric!  When you say something, mean it and follow through.  It gives you more credibility and people will have a greater respect for your words.  Also, in terms of getting together or meeting people, being there when you say you will be shows that you are responsible and respect other people's time.  This is definitely a valuable lesson for myself as well!
